The Federal Aviation Administration announced today it is relaxing rules around the use of electronic devices during all phases of flight operations. This applies to US domestic carriers. Cell phone usage is still not permitted (as this is under the FCC not the FAA) and there are still certain instances where it will be restricted (low visbility, etc).
Each airline will be required to submit a plan around their specific planes and their flight plans. Delta Airlines has already announced they have completed testing and would like to allow customers the use of devices as of Friday Nov 1, pending FAA approval.
I would imagine becuase of thier weight, laptops do not apply to this - but it will be interesting to see how the rules are applied in this scenario.
